I know music is like wine and everyone has their own preference, but certain inalienable facts remain. And one of those is that Coldplay, while entirely listenable, are the musical equivalent of Vanilla Ice Cream. (And no, I don't mean Vanilla Ice!)


You know, It's near impossible, as you said Grr Grr, to pick a favorite... but some albums stand above others, it's true. I think when it comes to an "album" I choose production and cohesiveness over stand-out songs... so that eliminates a LOT of albums. Hrm... well, imperfect as it is, I submit...

Good call with Air. For best albums ever, though, I have to go with what is easily the most well-composed, cohesive, creative rock album of its time... Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

It's unfortunate that, with the onset of internet music and single-track downloads, the album has really died. Most bands these days just throw a bunch of songs together on a cd without regard to how well they may or may not go together. Aside from Modest Mouse and jam/trance type bands, it seems like nobody big really puts forth the effort anymore.

Not to diverge too much from the main point of the thread, but I think the concept of an "album" as a whole is mainly the trademark of "progressive" rock (TOOL, NIN) and indie acts these days (Modest Mouse, Air, Decemberists). People who are dependent on how they look or act on music videos only try to make cohesive albums if they are trying to become more than a pretty face, and most people in the 'biz are just pretty faces playing other peoples' songs.

As for music and WOW:
While leveling a character Marvin Gaye's "Troubled Man" soundtrack is excellent to make the levels slide on by, as is Morphine's "The Night". When grinding rep I've found that the old-school Led Zeppelin song "Achilles Last Stand" is effective both for making the killing of endless amounts of mobs seem like an epic undertaking, as well as it seems to be about an 8 hour long song, so it passes the time well.

In general, it looks like last.fm says my 2 top albums I have listened to are TOOL's "Laterallus" and Blonde Redhead's "23" which are damn good albums.
